Patek Philippe Carre Galbe Ref. 3734

Patek Philippe is known for its high quality and innovation. They have some iconic models, think as the Nautilus or the Aquanaut. Complicated movements they are not scared of. In 1939, the ref. 1415HU made its debut in the Patek Philippe catalog, their first “official” World Timer. It’s uncertain as to the exact number of 1415HUs that were produced, but the consensus amongst Patek scholars seems to be around 155 pieces., each one equipped with at that time, all-new caliber 12-120Hu.

Their line of Calatrava models is an endless success throughout its existence. Introduced in 1932 for the first time inspired by the Bauhaus style. Bauhaus was an art school in Germany, not for mass production but rather based on individual art vision, so beautiful pieces but functional.

The Patek Philippe you see here is called Carre Galbe and is from 1985. Carre was inspired by the French language meaning square, and Galbe meaning curved. Also known as a tv shaped case, the vintage ones of course. The Ref. 3734 is made from 18k yellow gold and has a matt light champagne dial. A lot of Calatrava models have a hand-wound movement., but this 3734 has an automatic movement, caliber 310. A movement short time is produced with a central rotor.

The details of the shape of the markers are inspired by the 50s/60s area, beautiful for the vintage feeling. We put on a maroon alligator strap with the original 18k buckle. But maybe you do not like the color or type of leather. No problem you can always make it your style!

Are you interested in this masterpiece? It will be shown at the PAN Amsterdam art and design fair, from 20-27 November. Give us a visit and be surprised by our extremely fine curated collection of wristwatches.

Backstory

All the way back in 1839, Franciszek Czapek and Antoni Patek founded Patek, Czapek & Cie. in Geneva. The two Polish watchmakers manufactured pocket watches until an argument drove them apart in 1845. Patek teamed up with French watchmaker Adrien Philippe and in 1851, Patek, Philippe & Cie. was officially registered and the story of arguably the finest of watch manufacturers was truly underway.

The company would amass an impressive array of firsts and records. Among which the first perpetual calendar pocket watch, first split-second chronograph wristwatch, first perpetual calendar wristwatch and for twenty-seven years they held the record for most complicated watch movement: 33 complications.

Yes, we have entered the realm of haute horology.

The house registered its Calatrava cross logo in 1887. The Calatrava would later become one of the brand’s celebrated collections and even a design template for other brands.

Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet and Vacheron Constantin form what is lovingly referred to as the Holy trinity of watchmaking. Three houses that specialized in haute horology, pushing the boundaries of mechanical watchmaking, decoration and finishing techniques.

Much like Rolex and Omega rule the everyday-watch category, the Holy trinity rules haute horology. A sentiment reflected in Patek’s motto since 1996: You never actually own a Patek Philippe. You merely look after it for the next generation.
