Breitling Cosmonaute Ref. 81600

In 1884, 24-year-old Léon Breitling, a skilled watchmaker, arrived in Saint-Meier to design his first chronograph. The same year is also seen as the official founding year of Breitling. In 1892 the company moved to La Chaux-de-Fonds and produced pocket watches under the name “G. Léon Breitling SA Montbrillant Watch factory “. During the years Breitling noticed an increasing demand for dashboard clocks (in airplanes) and military chronographs. In 1915 Breitling introduced his first wrist chronograph with a central second hand and a 30-minute counter so that pilots could make their basic calculations. See here the origin of Breitling’s fame with pilot watches.

The development of the Cosmonaute came from the wish of Astronaut Commander Scott Carpenter to be able to wear a 24-hour watch for his upcoming space mission. That seemed handy to him in the room. He then contacted Breitling to develop such a watch.

The one you see here is one from 1980 with box, papers and Breitling service papers. The layout of the dial unchanged compared with the first one ever. A real ‘pilots’ watch waiting for a new adventurist.
