Leon Breitling founded Breitling SA in 1884 in St. Imier, Switzerland. The company would mature to become a lead manufacturer of watches for the aviation industry, among others. While modern Breitling is primarily known for its big sports watches, the house has a rich history with many highly influential models intended for pilots, divers and even astronauts.
Up until 2009, Breitling sourced and adapted movements from suppliers such as ETA and Valjoux. These would then be fitted to highly specialized watches, such as the iconic Navitimer, with its comprehensive calculator features on the dial and bezel. From 2009 onwards, Breitling started developing its own in-house movements, partly in cooperation with Tudor.
Among the most notabel models in Breitlings rich history are the Navitimer, Cosmonaute, Superocean, Colt and Chronomat. But you will find many hidden gems, subtle dress watches and quirky oddities if you look closely.
Breitling has a recognizable and outspoken design language. If you fall for one of its designs, nothing else will do it for you. There is nothing quite like the super-detailed, busy aesthetic of a Navitimer or the sculptured steel bezels of many of the brand’s more recent sports models. It is, therefore, one of those brands with a loyal following.
