Patek Philippe Calatrava Ref. 3579
For decades, Patek Philippe has been the unwavering standard-bearer of quality and luxury in the world of watchmaking, capturing the admiration of collectors worldwide. Their commitment to producing some of the most exquisite timepieces is undeniable, and Patek Philippe’s devotion to classical design, exacting standards, and a rich heritage sets them apart as a brand like no other.
Within this remarkable heritage lies the renowned Patek Philippe Calatrava collection. Introduced in 1932 as a dress watch emphasizing functionality over ornamentation, the collection aimed to provide a clear and utilitarian approach to timekeeping. The Patek Philippe Calatrava Ref. 3579, which I present here, maintains the same commitment to design rigidity while venturing beyond some of the collection’s established boundaries.
Launched in 1969 and manufactured until 1974, the Ref. 3579 reflects the unconventional design inspirations of its time. Although its design might not appear groundbreaking by today’s standards, the Ref. 3579 resides in a 33mm stainless steel tonneau-shaped case, marking a significant departure from Patek Philippe’s traditional case design. The Ref. 3579 stands as a truly unique vintage offering, exuding confidence in its originality. It demonstrates that even Patek Philippe, a brand known for its conservatism, is willing to explore new design horizons when the times call for it.
In keeping with Calatrava’s utilitarian ethos, Ref. 3579 houses a time-only movement, specifically the manually-wound cal. 23-300. Adorned with a captivating sunburst silver dial, devoid of superfluous details or distractions, the Ref. 3579’s design is characterized by its simplicity and unwavering commitment to being a classical, yet slightly unconventional timepiece.
This particular piece dates from 1972.

In 1932, the year in which brothers Charles and Jean Stern acquired Patek Philippe, the name of the manufacture’s prestigious symbol, the Calatrava cross, was given to a watch collection. The first true ‘family’ of watches Patek Philippe had created, the Calatrava quickly became a classic and is still regarded today as the brand’s most iconic collection.
The design was inspired by the Bauhaus movement, a German school of Arts based on the belief that ‘less is more’ and ‘form follows function’. Since the purpose of a watch is to tell the time, these principles discouraged any embellishments which could detract from the time-telling.
The result was a watch that was at once beautiful and practical. Presented in a round case with a flat bezel and simple dial with baton indices, the art of omission in the debut model Ref. 96, came to characterize the Calatrava’s understated, yet timeless style.
The design has become a template for other brands. A simple, minimalist dress watch with a sub-dial for the seconds at six o’clock, is often referred to as a Calatrava watch, regardless of the brand. So while Patek did it first, it is perfectly reasonable to stumble upon a JLC Calatrava or a Vacheron Constantin Calatrava.
