Rolex Datejust Ref. 6305 ‘Gilt Dial’ Incl. Box & Papers

The Rolex 6305 is an essential and rare watch in the history of the Rolex Datejust collection. This vintage timepiece, produced in the mid-1950s, is a fantastic find, especially in its current condition. It holds a significant place in the brand’s history, as it introduced several iconic design elements that are still used in Rolex models today.

One of the key innovations of the Rolex 6305 is its beautiful fluted bezel, a design feature that was first introduced on this reference. This fluted bezel, still used in modern Rolex Datejust models, adds texture and depth to the case. This particular example boasts a finely reeded bezel. The bezel’s importance lies not only in its aesthetic appeal but also in the fact that it marked the beginning of one of Rolex’s signature design elements.

The black dial of the 6305 is another highlight. It features a gilt design, providing an elegant and classic look. Upon closer inspection under a microscope, it’s clear that this is a genuine gilt dial from 1953—a significant detail for collectors. The dial has a striking contrast between the rich black background and the applied gold-coloured hour markers. Each hour marker is radium lumed for practicality, with an additional lume plot at the 3 o’clock position. This balance of beauty and functionality makes the 6305 dial truly exceptional.

The reference 6305 is historically significant as the first Rolex Datejust to feature the Cyclops lens, which magnifies the date window for easy readability. The gold-coloured frame around the date window on this watch indicates that it originally came with the Cyclops lens, a hallmark feature that Rolex is known for today. While most 6305 models come with the Cyclops lens, this particular example is paired with a smooth Plexiglas crystal, which enhances the clarity of the dial and allows the black dial to shine through with greater contrast and legibility.
Additionally, the Rolex 6305 features a two-tone case made of steel and gold, offering a sophisticated appearance. The watch also carries the distinctive “Brevet” crown, a Rolex patent mark that was used exclusively on earlier models like this one. The “Brevet” crown, marked with a cross, signifies that the crown design was patented by Rolex. It is quite rare and discontinued, making it a unique and highly sought-after feature among collectors of vintage Rolex pieces.

Completing the watch is the original folded Jubilee bracelet, produced in the same year as the watch itself (1953). Although this watch has a two-tone case made of steel and gold, and typically would come paired with a matching gold and steel bracelet, the family of the first owner confirmed that this was the original bracelet it came with. This makes the bracelet a unique and authentic accessory for the timepiece. The bracelet is from the same production year as the watch and enhances the overall look, giving the watch a complete and cohesive feel.
The cherry on top is the complete set, including the unique original box and papers, which further increase the desirability of this vintage Rolex. This is not just a watch; it’s a true piece of history, offering collectors a rare and authentic find.

Backstory

The Rolex Datejust is one of the most iconic watch designs ever made. We try not to use the term “iconic” too liberally, but it is surely justified here. Launched back in 1945 as the Ref. 4467, the design has been only marginally updated every now and then. And it has looked fresh and current ever since.

When it comes to vintage, two generations of Datejust are particularly popular; the Ref. 16xx and the later five-digit references. The 16xx models were made from the fifties until  roughly 1978 and feature a beautifully dimensional pie-pan dial. Many of these came on folded jubilee bracelets and they did not yet feature a quickset date.

When the reference was updated to five digits around 1978, the pie-pan dial was replaced by a flat dial. The caliber was updated to now feature a quickset date. A decade later, in 1988, a new update saw the introduction of a sapphire crystal. For us, this is where vintage Datejust becomes modern Datejust.

Countless variations can be found. Different bezels, bracelets, dial colors, sizes and materials. The Datejust is one of the most beloved and versatile watches around. If you are looking for a one-watch-collection, that works equally well with shorts as it does with a three-piece suit, the Datejust is probably a pretty safe bet!
