Panerai Luminor 1950 GMT Ref. OP6818 Full set
At AWCo, we love a 34mm vintage dress watch as much as the next person. But if you like a little more bulk on the wrist, look no further!
The Panerai Luminor GMT features the instantly recognizable Luminor case, equipped with a GMT hand for easy reading of a second timezone and a power reserve indicator displaying how many of the 72 hours you have left. A display caseback completes a very compelling execution of Panerai’s proven recipe.
Like most Panerai, the design is filled with historic references. The bulky case originates from the adapted pocket watch cases in which the first Panerai came. Here too, do we find the cause for the large crown guard mechanism. The first Panerai came with hand-wound pocket watch movements. Being hand-wound, it was impossible to install a screw-down crown as it would interfere with winding. The lever-operated crown with massive guarding arch was the logical solution. And lastly, the sandwich dial is another nod to history. Back in the day, a luminescent radium disc would be covered by a black dial with the numerals cut-out in negative, exposing the radium beneath. A so-called sandwich dial. While this example features the not-so-deadly modern LumiNova, the sandwich aesthetic has been maintained.
Panerai has a massive fan base, known as the Paneristi. If you feel you are a Paneristo deep down, maybe this is the opportunity to let it out!
