Rolex Oyster Quartz Datejust Ref. 17000

An unual but very cool Datejust.

The invention of quartz movements was not all that good for the swiss watch industry. At the time, quality and accuracy were most important, and all of a sudden Japan produced the most accurate watches for half the price. Many manufacturers decided to develop such a quartz movement since they did not know whether these would replace the mechanical ones in the long run.

Rolex introduced their quartz movements in 1976 for the Day-Date and Datejust models. Because the quartz models had to be different than the mechanical executions, Rolex re-shaped the case and bracelet. As you can see in the pictures, the quartz models became much more squared in terms of their case. The shape is way more thick and edgy, which also makes the domed bezel look more elevated compared to the traditional oyster case. The dimensions are simply entirely different and unique for a Datejust!

This specific Oysterquartz Datejust is from 1990, and definitely in good shape considering its age. The corners are sharp and the silver dial is in mint condition. If you’re looking for a unique Datejust, here’s your offer!
