Patek Philippe Calatrava Ref. 1509
In the early 1930s, the wristwatch was still a relatively new phenomenon but one that had rapidly gained popularity following its widespread use in World War I. It all started with the first Calatrava reference 96. The Calatrava takes its name from the ornate Calatrava cross, the cruciform symbol first used on the marching banners of the Calatrava knights who defended the Calatrava fortress against the Moors in 1158.
So this watch is twice as old as us and still in original condition, untouched. 18k yellow gold case with ‘teardrop’ lugs, highly fancy in those days. Designwise it takes after the very first Calatrava in 1932., the decentralized second hand and how the name is Patek Philippe & Co is made into the dial. Patek has kept an archive over the years, it goes back to the beginning of the 20th century. This watch comes also with an extract of the archive.
Want to look sharp and any time at every occasion…then this is a contender!
