“The Original” – A Coveted Speedmaster for Collectors
The Omega Speedmaster, revered as the manual chronograph of choice, owes its timeless appeal to its association with NASA’s space missions. In 1969, when the monumental lunar expedition triumphantly concluded, Omega decided to commemorate this extraordinary achievement with a special timepiece. The outcome was a resplendent gold Speedmaster, where 33 out of 1014 were intended for distribution among esteemed individuals such as politicians, presidents, and NASA personnel. The rest was available to the general public.
Out of the 1014 watches produced, the first piece was offered to President Nixon, while the second was presented to Vice President Spiro Agnew. Unfortunately, both dignitaries declined the offer, citing compliance reasons. Subsequently, during a grand banquet on November 25, 1969, 19 watches were bestowed upon NASA astronauts, acknowledging their pivotal contributions. Additional astronauts, who were unable to attend the banquet or embarked on subsequent missions after 1969, also received their coveted golden timepieces. Remarkably, these watches bear the inscription, “to mark man’s conquest of space with time, through time, on time,” a phrase echoed by Jim Lovell during a Q&A session at the Speedmaster Event held in Houston last May. Some uncertainty surrounds whether Jack Swigert and Fred Haise of the Apollo 13 mission received these timepieces, as their names are absent from the lists of watches allocated to astronauts. However, reliable sources suggest that they were offered the watches at a later date. Furthermore, a select number of watches, featuring alternative engravings, were presented to Swiss executives from Omega and Lemania during that period.
Crafted entirely from 18k gold, this remarkable Speedmaster, boasting a limited production run of merely 1014 units, stands as an exemplar of collectibility. The back of the watch features the ‘straight-writing’ signing with the unique number of the watch, 210 in this case. Adorned with an exquisite applied logo and powered by the renowned caliber 861, this timepiece exemplifies both elegance and precision. The distinctive round ‘O’ emblem proudly represents its Swiss origin, with the letters OM denoting Omega Massif—a homage to the fact that the watch exclusively came equipped with a solid gold bracelet.
