Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Ref. 4100
The modest Royal Oak.
The 1970s meant the beginning of the quartz crisis. This meant to some brands difficult times which would impact their future quite negatively, other brands managed to survive and actually came out stronger. Think of Patek Philippe, Rolex, and yes, Audemars Piguet. They introduced their Royal Oak in 1972. The revolutionary design by Gerald Genta was an instant success all over the world, the vintage jumbo Royal Oak was the one which probably has determined the success of the brand today, nevertheless, the model has become a true icon.
This specific piece is the small cousin of the original ‘jumbo’ size, this piece has a 35mm. diameter and is elegant on both a men’s or women’s wrist. The bracelet on the Royal Oak is one of the finest in watchmaking history. This specific watch is built with the durable ‘Tantalum’ and 18k gold. Tantalum is a slightly blue and grey coloured type of stainless steel and a more exclusive material than regular alloy..
The beautiful and famous octagon-shaped bezel has become a recognizable face to many people. Most modern watches by AP have a flashy and glossy finish on their bezel, a feature which a lot of people do not like about modern watches. The bezel on this piece is more of a brushed gold, looking very elegant with the tantalum alloy. The petite tapiserrie dial has the same colour as the tantalum alloy which keeps the face calm. The dial is spotless and has an applied gold logo and hour markers.
The legendary AP bracelet is overall in great condition. Very little stretch and sharp edges on the side of the links. The cool thing about Audemars Piguet’s bracelet is that every link is different, the size of every link shrinks towards the clasp. Then the links are connected with 2 joints in such a tight way that any Royal Oak will fit perfectly on the wrist with a solid appearance.
